What is RSS?

Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content to you. These feeds use a technology called XML (extensible markup language) to deliver information to your desktop, web browser, or email box. The RSS feeds provide headlines and descriptions of content, along with links to the full articles. RSS feeds typically are linked or indicated by an orange rectangle with the letters RSS or by the RSS icon RSS Feed Icon

Why would I subscribe to an RSS feed?

The main advantage of RSS feeds is quite simple--they save time. Instead of remembering to visit a favorite website, the news comes directly into your computer daily or at whatever interval you want. What's more, most RSS feeds contain just links, headlines, or brief summaries of new information only. That means you can quickly scan them before linking to longer articles. In addition, the small amount of data can be sent to any XML-compatible device--such as a cell phone, pager, or handheld computer--without a lengthy download. More importantly, RSS gives you control over receiving information you want without revealing information about yourself. Unlike subscribing to an email newsletter, you never have to give out your email address with an RSS feed. That avoids the possibility of receiving spam or unwanted junk email from the website.

How do I subscribe to a feed?

First, you will need a feed reader. Use your favorite search engine to find a "feed reader," “news reader,” or “aggregator.” Many are available for free. Some readers are downloaded to your computer, whereas others are web-based, so you can access your feeds from anywhere. Some newer browsers and email clients have feed readers built right in.

Once you have a reader, it is easy to subscribe to feeds. When you see the RSS icon on our (or any) site, just select the icon or link to open the feed page. Simply copy the address of the feed to your reader. Some feed readers have additional methods for subscribing as well. You can also bookmark individual feeds in your browser’s “favorites.”

How do I get the feeds?

Once you subscribe, your reader will check the feeds for you automatically and update you with the latest headlines. When you see a headline that interests you, just select the link to view the full article. How you receive the feed depends on your reader. For example, a web-based reader (such as Google) requires you to log into a website to view your feeds. An email client reader (such as Outlook) will bring the feeds directly to your email. Readers can also be customized in various ways to meet your particular preferences
